Not sure your card terminals are supported? Pay Sync works with card terminals on a supported terminal provider's cloud service. Contact us to check yours.
What to include in a report
- Your shop domain (e.g.
your-shop.myshopify.com) - The location and till the issue happened at, and the terminal ID if you have it
- The Shopify order number, if the sale went through
- The RRN or reference printed on the terminal's slip, if there is one
- When it happened, in South African time
- Your mode and environment (Simulator, or Live on Test or Production)
- What you expected to happen, and what happened instead
- A photo or screenshot of the till or terminal screen, if relevant
Getting set up
- Install Pay Sync from the Shopify App Store. It starts in Simulator mode, so no real terminal is contacted yet.
- Try Simulator mode. It runs the whole loop without a terminal and charges nothing. It is the safest way to see what Pay Sync does before you connect your terminal provider.
- Create the POS custom payment method. In your Shopify admin, open the Point of Sale editor (where you arrange the smart grid), go to Checkout and add a custom payment type named exactly as Pay Sync's Settings page shows under "Custom payment type name" (the default is "Card terminal"). Cashiers finish a terminal sale with this payment method, and Pay Sync recognises the sale by its name.
- Connect your terminal provider. In Pay Sync, enter the connection details your terminal provider gave you (in Settings and on the Terminals page). You start on the Test environment. Production, which takes real card payments, is switched on by Pay Sync support once your terminal provider confirms you are ready to go live, so email us to request it. Not sure what to enter? Email us.
- Add the Pay Sync tile to the POS smart grid. The tile is what the cashier taps to send the sale total to the terminal.
- Set up each till from the tile. On each till, tap the Pay Sync tile and enter the till number shown on the card terminal next to it. Pay Sync pairs that till with the terminal.

See the Privacy Policy for what data is collected and how it is retained, and the Terms of Service for billing and service terms.
Known limitations
We would rather you know these up front than discover them at the till during a busy trading period.
- Pay Sync never blocks a sale. The cashier always finishes the sale in POS with your shop's own custom payment method. If a terminal is offline, slow or returns an unexpected answer, the cashier can key the amount on the terminal as usual, and the problem is raised afterwards as an exception for review.
- Reconciliation depends on the terminal responding. If a terminal transaction succeeds but its response never reaches Pay Sync (network drop, terminal restart), the payment shows as an exception until it is matched to its sale, either automatically when exactly one sale fits or by hand. This is expected, and the reason the exceptions list exists.
- It works only while the device is online. POS greys out app tiles when the device is offline, so the Pay Sync tile is not available then. Key the amount on the terminal as usual, finish the sale with the custom payment method, and capture the slip afterwards.
- Times and nightly reconciliation run on South African time. The times Pay Sync shows, the trading day in the daily report and the nightly reconciliation all use South African time (Africa/Johannesburg), whatever time zone your Shopify store is set to.
