Tutorial - try Pay Sync in ten minutes

Install Pay Sync and take a practice card payment in Simulator mode, start to finish.

#What will I do in this tutorial?

You will install Pay Sync, add a practice terminal, put the Pay Sync tile on your till and take a test sale. You need no real terminal and no account with your terminal provider. Pay Sync starts in Simulator mode, where no real terminal is contacted and no card is charged. You can use a phone or tablet running Shopify POS.

#Step by step

  1. Install and choose a plan. Install Pay Sync from the Shopify App Store. Shopify shows the plan page. Choose the plan. You are billed per card terminal that takes a payment, and a plan never stops a sale at the till.
  2. Open Terminals. In Pay Sync, open Terminals and press Sync locations from Shopify. Your store locations appear under Stores.
  3. Add a practice terminal. Press Add terminal. Enter a Name, such as Front till, and choose the Store. Leave Site ID, Till number and POS device ID empty. Press Add terminal.
  4. Add the custom payment type. In the Shopify admin, open the Point of Sale editor, the place where you arrange the smart grid. Go to Checkout, press Add custom payment type and name it exactly Card terminal. This must match the Custom payment type name field on the Pay Sync Settings page, under Matching.
  5. Add the tile. In the same editor, add the Pay Sync tile to the smart grid. In the editor it is labelled Pay on terminal. On the grid it reads Card payment. The one-tap tile, Send total to terminal, is optional.
  6. Restart POS. Close Shopify POS fully and open it again. A till keeps the old version until POS is force-closed.

Careful: The payment type name must match in both places, letter for letter. If it does not, Pay Sync cannot recognise your sales. The dashboard shows a banner, Set up the custom payment type, until the first matching sale arrives.

#How do I take a practice sale?

The simulator answers by the last two digits of the sale total. For your first try, make the total end in .00, for example 120.00.

  1. Add items so the total ends in .00.
  2. Tap the Card payment tile, then Send R 120.00 to terminal (a shop in another currency shows its currency code instead of R). In 04-at-the-till.md use the same example.
  3. The till shows Waiting for the card. After about three seconds the simulator approves.
  4. The till shows Approved with the RRN and auth code.
  5. Tap Checkout, choose Card terminal and mark the sale as paid.

#What do the other endings do?

Start a new cart for each one.

Total ends inThe simulator answers
.00Approved, after about three seconds. Any ending not listed below also approves.
.01Declined. The till offers Try again.
.02No answer. After about 30 seconds the till shows No response.
.03Approved after about 12 seconds, like a slow terminal.
.04Terminal error.

Note: For .02 the simulator never answers, so after about 30 seconds Pay Sync stops waiting and the till shows No response. Nothing is added to Exceptions for a practice sale. With a real terminal, always look at the terminal before sending again, because it may still have completed the payment.

#Where do I see the result?

  1. In the Shopify admin, open the order. Scroll to Metafields, press View all, then View read only metafields. You will see the terminal's RRN, authorisation code, terminal ID, outcome and amount. Because this was a practice sale, the Capture source says SIMULATOR.
  2. In Pay Sync, open Transactions. The sale is listed with its outcome, matched to the order.
  3. Tap the Card payment tile and open Daily report to see the same sale from the till.

#What next?

When the practice sale works, read At the till with your cashiers. When you are ready for real terminals, read Connecting terminals. Stuck at any step? Contact support.
